Around 40 to 50% of fertility problems are related to male factors. A recent study out of Denmark and published in the medical journal JAMA shows that taking omega-3 fish oil on a regular basis may boost sperm count, which could help couples struggling with infertility.
The study showed an association between regular fish oil intake and higher levels of sperm, semen volume as well as higher levels of hormones associated with good testicular function.
The test group was a cross-section of healthy males, with an average age of 19. Those who participated were asked to fill out questionnaires regarding their vitamin and supplement intake as well as other lifestyle questions. There were no significant differences in sperm count between the men who took vitamins only (with no omega-3s) and those who took none.
It is important to note that the products the men took varied. The men self-reported their fish oil use and the strength they were taking is not clear. However, the men who said they took fish oil on a regular basis, had larger testes, higher semen volume, as well as higher sperm count, compared with men who did not use supplements.
The positive effects of fish oil on sperm count and testicular health are worth further investigation and study. In the meantime, though, for men struggling with low sperm count, it could be worth adding fish oil to their daily regimen as it is a safe supplement to take.
While supplements can be helpful in improving sperm health, it is also important to follow a healthy lifestyle that includes no smoking, limited alcohol and lots of whole foods and fresh vegetables.
